All going as planned—and there is only good reason
to think it will—UWMC Theatre will relocate to an entirely new facility
in August of 2010! Keep an eye on Stewart Avenue between 6th and 7th
streets to follow our progress—a dream come true!
We intend to bid a fond farewell to the existing space with plans for a
remarkable 2009-2010 Season:
Neil Lebute’s play Fat Pig offers a poignant look at the
prejudice directed at overweight women. The play’s protagonist, Helen,
is an endearing and lively woman who happens to be quite obese. Quite
to his own surprise (and, eventually, his delight) Tom, a young
professional, falls in love with her. The ridicule he experiences and
his ever present awareness of the cultural taboo attached to women of
size motivates the play’s action. Will the pressure to conform to
societal standards of beauty ultimately outweigh Tom’s attraction to
Helen?
Production Dates: November 9, 10, 11, & 12, 2009
Playwright Martin McDonagh keeps alive both the dark humor and
storytelling tradition of Ireland. The popularity of shows like South
Park and Family Guy have created a sensibility quite compatible with
McDonagh’s approach to theatre. The Cripple of Inishman
relies on the irreverent dark humor and captures the essence of life in
an impoverished Irish village.
"Martin McDonagh's The
Cripple Of Inishman is as funny and sad and exhilarating a new play
as I've seen for some time. ….. Mr. McDonagh once again proves
himself an adept story teller, with a keen eye and ear for capturing
both the humor and sadness of people trapped in lives devoid of
social or cultural stimulus or economic advantages." -- Elyse
Sommer, New York Times
Production Dates: March 3, 4, 5 and 7, 2010 Auditions TBA
Also in the works -- two residencies: one early in the Fall semester
featuring improvisation and one late in the Spring as we workshop a full
length version of Google, the MusiCAL—with the Hammond
Brothers of Minneapolis who brought to one-act version to the
Minneapolis Fringe festival… UWMC Theatre will present the world
premiere of this charming piece in Fall 2010 to initiate our new space!
