Acronyms and Abbreviations at UWMC

Associate of Arts and Sciences (AAS): The UW Colleges offers a liberal arts-based general education degree which is a foundation for most majors in the UW System. The degree requirements can be found on page 46 of the UW Colleges catalog.

Application and Performance (AP): For an AAS degree, a student must earn a minimum of three credits in courses designated as AP. These courses are generally found in the disciplines of Art, Business, Communication and Theatre Arts, Computer Science, Education, Engineering, English, French, German, Music, Physical Education, and Spanish.

Advance Tuition Deposit (ATD): All UWC campuses require a $100 deposit prior to registration which will be applied toward your tuition and fees.

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.): A B.A. degree typically includes one year of a foreign language as a degree requirement.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.): A B.S. degree typically includes 12-15 credits of natural sciences and mathematics as a degree requirement.

Collaborative Degree Program (CDP): A program which enables students to earn a degree in Business Administration or General Studies from UW-Stevens Point on the UWMC campus.

Community Advisor (CA): CA’s are students in Marathon Hall who serve as community builders, programmers, and facilitators of the hall.

Compressed Video (CV).: A real-time class format that utilizes audio, computer, and video links simultaneously.

Desire 2 Learn (D2L): The UW Colleges course management system.  Desire2Learn (D2L) provides a way for your instructors to integrate online materials and activities into your courses.

Elective (EL):
A student who has met the core requirements and the other breadth category minimums may complete the 60 credit minimum requirement for an AAS degree with courses in this category or any other breadth category.

Ethnic Studies (ES): A student must earn a minimum of three credits in courses designated as Ethnic Studies to earn an AAS degree. These classes are found throughout the curriculum and may vary on different UWC campuses.

Fine Arts (FA) and Humanities (HU): For an AAS degree, a student must earn a minimum of nine credits in Fine Arts and Humanities with at least one course designated as Fine Arts and one course designated as Humanities. Courses with degree designations of FA and HU are typically in the disciplines of Art, Communication and Theatre Arts, English, French, German, History, Music, Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Spanish.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): The application form for free financial assistance through the U.S. Department of Education.

Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA): This law affords students certain rights with respect to their educational records. You can learn more about these rights on page 39 of the UW Colleges catalog.

Grade Point Average (GPA): A grade point average indicates the quality of a student’s work. The highest possible GPA is 4.0, representing an A in each credit course attempted. The GPA is determined by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the total number of credits attempted.

Higher Education Location Program (HELP): HELP provides a one-stop shop for UW system student information. It is available on the web at www.uwhelp.wisconsin.edu or toll free at 1-800-442-6459.

Intramurals (IM): Leagues and tournaments are organized throughout the year for students. Past programs have included: volleyball, flag football, basketball, softball, and recreational tournaments. For more information, contact Student Services.

Interdisciplinary Studies (IS): For an AAS degree, a student must earn a minimum of three credits in courses designated as IS. IS courses are campus specific and can be found in the campus course schedule with an IS designation.

Laboratory Science (LS): For an AAS degree, a student must satisfactorily complete one natural science course with a laboratory component.

Multicultural Resource Center (MRC): The MRC is located across the hall from the bookstore. This student-led organization plans speakers, workshops, and events throughout the year.

Mathematical Science (MS) and Natural Science (NS): For an AAS degree, a student must earn a minimum of 11 credits of Mathematical and Natural Sciences.

Prerequisite (Prereq): A course or requirement that must be successfully completed in order to enroll in the next course of a sequence.

PRISM: The online registration system shows where students can schedule classes, find out the balance of their tuition bill, view their financial aid, and more.

Student Government Association (SGA): If you are a student at UWMC, you a member of the Student Government Association. The SGA has a body of elected senators and executive members who serve as representatives of the student body on campus committees, plan activities for the campus, and address student issues.

Social Science (SS): For an AAS degree, students must earn a minimum of nine credits from at least two disciplines in the Social Sciences. Social Science disciplines include: Anthropology, Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology.

Transfer Information System (TIS):  TIS is an online resource that lists course equivalencies between the UW system institutions as well as the Wisconsin Technical College System.

University of Wisconsin Colleges (UWC): The University of Wisconsin Colleges is a multi-campus institution (13) of which UW-Marathon County is a member. The mission of the UWC is to prepare students for success at the baccalaureate level of education and provides the first two years of a liberal arts general education that is accessible and affordable.
