Better Grades - 30 Ways

Tips for Daily Studying

Study in a quiet, well-lighted place.
Review class notes taken that day.
Complete all homework assignments.
Read all material that the instructor may cover during the next lecture.
Underline, highlight, or take notes as you read (use only one side of the paper – makes it easier to lay them out to study from).
Keep an academic calendar/planner and to-do lists to manage your time and keep up with assignments.
Take time to spend with friends and family.
Get a good night’s rest so that you are refreshed and alert.

Tips for the Classroom

Take 10 minutes to look over notes from the previous days lecture and/or completed homework.
Sit in or near the front of the class.
Be prepared – notebook, pen, pencil, textbook, calculator, etc.
Focus your attention.
Take good notes – get the main points – not every word.
Develop a system of abbreviations/symbols to help you take notes.
Get involved in class discussions.
Ask questions.
Take 10 minutes after class (ASAP) to review the day’s notes.

Tips for Test Preparation

Review your notes.
Look up points that are not clear.
Try to predict test questions.
Consider using flashcards.
Ask the instructor what to expect from tests.
Don’t try to cram all of your studying into one night.
Develop a study group.
Think positively and do your best.
Read directions carefully.
Review your graded test and learn where you made mistakes.

Tips for Managing Large Projects

Break large projects into smaller portions.
Set deadlines for completing portions and put this information in your planner. Meet those deadlines!
If you experience difficulties, consult your instructor.
